Remarks

Many different locations have been suggested for the painting. Dr. MacCallum recalled that it was on a trip to Lake Cauchon which he took with Thomson, Lawren Harris, and Harris’s cousin Chester Harris, that Thomson painted his sketch for that painting, as he wrote in a letter to Miss A.L. Beatty, at the Art Gallery of Toronto, May 14, 1937, (Edward P. Taylor Research Library and Archives, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto). The most recent theory, by Stan Verscay of Bowmanville, is that Thomson painted the sketch at Manitou Lake.
