Remarks

William J. Ard owned the general store in South River where Tom Thomson bought his supplies. Ard acquired the sketch from J.W. Beatty for $25.00. In a letter from Dr. J.M. MacCallum to Thomson, 28 May 1917, MacCallum wrote: “I have deposited to your credit a cheque for $25.00 given to me by Bill Beatty for a sketch of yours which he had sold to some chap from South River.” (The letter is published in Murray 1994a, 92).
