Remarks
In “My Recollections of Tom Thomson, the Artist,” 10 October 1969, Lottie M. Shildrick wrote that she met Thomson for the first time in December of 1905 when he was living with Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Watson, old friends of Thomson from Chatham, Ontario. The Watsons were parents of her future husband, Harry Watson, whom she married in 1907. Thomson often came to the home of Lottie and Harry Watson. He painted this work as a present for them.
